Cashews were first discovered in Brazil around the year 1558. They had irritating shells and hence most people found it inedible at first. Then they learnt the procedure of the roasted cashews so that they can let go of the irritants.

The Europeans found the nutty flavour of the cashews to be quite fascinating and they used the cashew apple pulp in order to make wine. Later the natives learnt about eating cashew nuts from the primates. After the discovery the Portuguese did bring the cashews in Goa in and around 1560. And Indians soon discovered the health and healing benefits of cashews. At the second half of the 16th century, this variety of nut also became popular in Southeast Asia and Africa. Around the year 1905, they reached United States as well but it did not gain popularity till 1920. In the year 1941, India became the primary supplier of the cashews to the States on an annual basis. Since then, cashews have become a very popular nut variety in almost every corner of the world.
